Documentation & FAQ

For installation and command reference, see the download page and run vardoger --help.

The following are answers to common questions. For anything not covered here, please open an issue.

What is Vardoger?

Vardoger mounts cloud storage — Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, SFTP, and WebDAV — as a real filesystem (FUSE on Linux, WinFsp on Windows). Files are streamed and cached locally; you can use them with any application that reads files.

How does Vardoger use my Google account?

When you connect Google Drive, Vardoger signs you in with Google’s standard OAuth 2.0 flow (using PKCE) — you approve access in your browser and Vardoger never sees your Google password. It uses that access solely to list your Drive files and folders, download the files you open, and upload the changes you save — that is what lets your Drive appear as a mounted drive you can browse and edit. Your files and Google credentials are handled on your device and move directly between your device and Google; they never pass through Vardoger’s servers, are never sold or used for advertising, and are never read by anyone. Vardoger’s use of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Full detail is in the application privacy policy.

Where do my cloud secrets live?

In your operating system's keyring — OAuth tokens, SFTP/WebDAV passwords, and your licence key alike. They are never written to plaintext files. Vardoger's config directory (~/.config/vardoger/, directory permissions 0o700) holds only non-secret data such as account metadata and public OAuth client configuration, at file permissions 0o600. Your secrets never leave your machine.

What does the licence registry store?

Only one-way hashes and timestamps: a hash of your licence key and a hash of each connected cloud account's identity. There is no device fingerprint — devices are not tracked at all. It never sees your email, username, server name, filenames, file contents, or cloud tokens. See the application privacy policy for the full list.

What happens when I move to a new computer?

Activate Vardoger on the new machine with your licence key — devices are unlimited, so this never uses anything up. Slots count cloud accounts (up to four per licence); the same account on your new machine occupies the same slot.

What if I am offline?

Vardoger has a 7-day offline grace period for licence validation, so being away from the network never locks you out for a week.
